My experience of the 11 plus Exam!

A sea of thousands of students stood outside the sport hall. I was 11 years old, and for the first time, I was genuinely nervous. I had always been used to the calm, cosy environment of my small preparatory school, yet this was completely different. I had never seen so many people in my entire life. Yet every student, approximately 10,000, were all competing for only 150 spaces at this very competitive grammar school.

As a parent, it is very hard to put yourself into the mind of an 11 year old about to sit the 11+ exam. Sometimes parents seem to assume their children are simply ‘little adults’ that can cope with stress and pressure just like they do. But they don’t. I remember not being aware of why I felt sick in my stomach, or why I did not feel like eating. It is only know that I was aware that these were the first signs of anxiety. I remember not wanting to disappoint my parents who had put time and money into all the 11+ practice tests I had done. I also remember feeling unprepared compared to all these students, many of whom had their 11+ books in their hands, frantically reading through some last minute revision.

At this point in time, what would have put me at ease is reassurance. To be with my parents and for them to tell me that what I am feeling is normal, and that I was prepared. The 11+ exam can for many children be the first catalyst towards exam anxiety, and it’s easy to forget that as a young child, many coping mechanisms they pick up now, good or bad, will follow them through for a lifetime.

I walked in and the exam went so fast. I remember looking up and seeing all these children scribbling aware furiously, covering their work as their parents told them to avoid anyone copying them. They all seemed so much smarter and well prepared, so determined to succeed.

Yet, only a month later I received my results. I received a place. All my fear, worry and lack of self-confidence had disappeared. It was at this point, my life trajectory changed. I was able to progress through the school, and achieve 10A* at GCSE, and 100% in my biology AS Level, with an AAA* at A-Level enabling me to get into Imperial College London to study Medicine.

15 years on, I am now a qualified doctor, but also run a company called Secondary Entrance, helping children gain admission, just like I did, to the most competitive 11+ schools in the country.

Life really can change with 1 exam, and for so many children like myself, we understand the importance of this exam, but not necessarily the long-term consequences of it.

Why choose our papers?

We sell our 11 plus papers in books of 15 online test papers with solutions, and these books can be purchased in 4 different packages and be accessed for a certain amount of time through our integrated online portal system. We have 4 books in each of 11 plus Maths, 11 plus English, 11 plus Verbal Reasoning and 11 plus Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Each package allows you to buy a certain number of books in any subject combination you wish. For example, with a Bronze Package (4 books) you may choose to pick 2 Maths books (30 test papers) alongside 1 Verbal Reasoning book (15 test papers) and 1 English book (15 test papers). You could instead choose to order all 4 Maths books (60 test papers) in one go. Any which way, you will end up with access to 60 test papers with this package. You will have the opportunity to make your exact selection of books at checkout.

Across counties in the UK, the four subjects are often prioritised differently. Additionally, you know which subjects your child needs to focus on, and so with this system you can tailor your package to best suit your child’s needs.

What do you get with each package?

Bronze – Within the Bronze package, you can choose any 4 books (60 tests in total) from the 4 available subjects. You will be able to access these test papers online for 4 months through our online system.
Silver – Within the Silver package, you can choose up to 8 books (120 tests in total) with 12 months of online access.
Gold – Within the Gold package you may pick 12 books (180 tests in total) with 12 months of online access.
Platinum – Our Platinum package contains all 16 books (240 tests in total) with 16 months of online access. It is extensive, but ideal for the early starter.

Is there a difference in difficulty between the 4 books within each subject?

To a slight extent. Each book within each subject is challenging and contains a diversity of easy and difficult tests, however there is a very gradual upwards progression in difficulty moving from Book 1 to Book 4. This means that your child will continue on a learning curve while noticing that their results are improving, building both aptitude and confidence.

How to prepare for the 11+ : Part 3

3 months till the exam. The number of 11+ papers your child is now doing should increase to 2-3 a day. Their timing should now be up to speed, and you can begin to experiment with different maths, english and verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions if your child starts to tire or begins to adopt rout learning routines.

At this stage parents should still be support with ample papers offered by Secondary Entrance, and if there is any need for any more, the opportunity to order more online 11+ practice tests is always available, to upgrade to a higher package.

How to prepare for the 11+ – Part 2

6 months before the 11+ exam

Your child should now be well rehearsed in the idea of taking 11+ practice papers in a relaxed environment. You can now attempt to provide timing to these practice papers, as recommended at the front of the practice packs. We recommend for 11+ papers, students should use no more than 1 hour for our maths paper, non-verbal reasoning or verbal reasoning.

It may be such that your child does not finish the paper, or that they rush near the end, and miss some easy marks. It is at this stage when you develop a 11+ triage system if necessary, that your child misses out questions that are taking them too long, as each question is still only worth one mark, regardless of difficulty. We have also included some multiple mark questions, just in case your child is sitting for an 11+ independent school exam.

By getting your child into a habit of doing questions under timed conditions, the stress nearer the exams is ablated, as they have been very well rehearsed in this.

Secondary Entrance offers a vast number of practice papers, to ensure your child has enough material to never run out of experience, or to have to trawl the internet looking for further material. At this point you may also consider a Secondary Entrance tutor who has experience in the papers and in sitting the 11+, to give your child further motivation from someone who has sat the paper themselves.

How to prepare for the 11+ – Part 1

12 months before the exam!

Hello everyone! This is the first post in a series of posts about how to EFFECTIVELY prepare for the 11+ exams! By Suraj from Secondary Entrance

Familiarisation is so very important, therefore regardless of which exam your child is sitting, they need to know content required. Information about each school’s exam structure can be found on the school website or other 11+ advice websites.

Any 11+ parent should be able to now good idea about the strengths and weaknesses of a child at this point, particularly within applying for Secondary School places, and aim to fill out any gaps in their knowledge to achieve the best results in secondary entrance.

How can we, Secondary Entrance, help you? Within each of our papers, all points of the relevant subject’s syllabus is accounted for, that is including maths, english, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Therefore by simply doing 2-3 of our test papers, and gaps in a child’s knowledge becomes clear from the start.  This then means you can focus your time on the syllabus points that need to be to be addressed.

Your child should be able test the water and begin 11+ practice papers and experience the style of an actual 11+ exam. This should be in a non-pressured environment, with enough time to think about each question. This includes reading the question, internalising it, and then making an answer. This should be no more than one paper a day, and you should rotate subjects between mainly maths and english at the start, as they form the basis upon which verbal and non-verbal reasoning can occur, which require greater application within the 11+.  PLEASE ensure your child does not suffer from fatigue or boredom due to repetition.

Secondary Entrance sells packages in packs of 15, each one designed to last for 3 months. Therefore, a silver package contains 2 packs of 15, and lasts for 6 months. Your child may move through papers quicker or slower depending on their experience and ability and it is very important to understand that our papers assess all difficulty levels, therefore a child may not be improving as well as you expect, but this may be due to the gradual increase in difficulty all our papers offer.
